ADHD & Sleep
Astronauts can have issues with their circadian rhythm while in space. NASA researchers have developed LED lighting that can trigger a message to the brain where regulation of the circadian rhythm takes place. The company, Lighting Science, created both daylighting and nighttime lighting. The daytime lighting produces blue light that suppresses melatonin, which is a hormone the brain produces in response to darkness. The nighttime lighting bulb produces significantly less blue light than regular lighting, which helps support the natural cycle of melatonin (Spinoff, 2015). Circadian rhythm alarm clocks can help an individual wake up in the morning by mimicking the sunrise, which provides a peaceful way of waking in the morning. Some say this is also because of our innate connection to nature. Mimicking familiar sounds and light phases can keep one in touch with nature, which benefits well-being. Research has shown that warm-white light has a calming effect, which is beneficial when an individual is preparing for sleep (Ulrich et al., 2008). Lighting control is most beneficial in the bedroom, lighting on either side of the bed should be symmetrical, warm, and easily controlled with a dimmer switch next to the bed. Applying extendible arm sconces or fixtures with dimmer switches for control are a good option because this type of lighting will provide flexibility in light levels and gain more surface space beside the bed for nighttime routine items.
